JOINING GUIDE / JAVA + BEDROCK / EN
Start at the right window.
Edition and version mismatches can look like network trouble. Identify both before changing a router, launcher, or account setting.
01 / EDITION WINDOWS
Equivalent four-step checks
Java Edition
Use the exact Java version the destination publishes. The official launcher can keep a separate installation for that version.
Confirm that the destination accepts Java Edition; Java and Bedrock are different connection paths.
Match the published server version. If needed, create or select that version under Installations in the official launcher.
Open Multiplayer, then use Direct Connection or Add Server and enter the address supplied by the destination.
If joining fails, keep the exact message and your client-listed ping; do not turn one reading into a network diagnosis.

Bedrock Edition
Confirm the destination accepts Bedrock and follow its stated version requirement. Device and console connection menus can differ.
Confirm that the destination accepts Bedrock Edition and that your device offers the required server, Realm, friend, or invite route.
Compare your displayed game version with the destination requirement; update through your device store when a current version is required.
Check Microsoft sign-in, multiplayer permissions, and any console online-service requirement before changing network settings.
Use the route the destination documents and keep the exact error if it fails; this counter does not contact the destination.

02 / KEEP THE EXACT MESSAGE
Read the failure before acting
Wording varies by edition and service. These are categories, not live diagnoses.
| Signal | Check first | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| Version or edition mismatch | The destination’s stated edition and version. | Use the matching checklist above; do not change network settings first. |
| Sign-in or multiplayer permission | Microsoft sign-in, account permissions, and any console online-service requirement. | Use official account and platform settings; never enter credentials into a server form or bot. |
| Timeout, refusal, or unable to connect | Whether another known destination works on the same client. | If only one destination fails, keep the exact message and contact that destination; if all fail, check the local connection. |
03 / ACCOUNT SAFETY
Three hard stops
Enter a Microsoft password only in the official sign-in flow.
Do not install an unverified launcher, client, or file because a stranger or verification bot demands it.
Keep the exact error and source link. A screenshot is evidence; a guessed diagnosis is not.
